"If we as a community don't step up
to help each other, then who will?"

A man dubbed Calgary's "Scooter Guy" after a video of him riding his scooter during a winter blizzard on Deerfoot Tr went viral online got a new car this Christmas!

After watching the video, our team reached out to 98.5 Virgin Radio - who'd already started a GoFundMe page for the unknown man - to find out more about him and to get his back-story.  As it turned out, he was just barely getting by and was supporting his family, paying the mortgage and couldn't afford a new vehicle.  His scooter was his only way of commuting to and from the city for work and to get to church on Sundays.  After speaking with his employer, close friends and acquaintances, we came to learn just how generous he was by giving back to the community while having very little of his own.  It was then that we knew we wanted to step in and help him out!

Our General Manager, Chris Thin, decided to donate a 2010 Dodge Charger SXT AWD to him on Saturday, December 10th 2016 and the Automaxx Team experienced all the feels!!  But the donations didn't stop there...

Action Insurance gifted the man with 6 months of free insurance and our friend Kathy at GlobalWarranty also took part in donating by covering his 3 year warranty.  Tyler Hall from 98.5 Virgin Radio managed to raise just over $6,800 to cover the cost of gas and maintenance of the car, as well.

Automaxx would like to thank everyone who took part in this experience and for the positive feedback we've received through emails, phone calls and social media.  Once again, Calgary came together as a community and managed to pull off a Christmas miracle just in time for the holidays!

"Without a sense of caring,
there can be no sense of community."

Jessica Travadi, a single mother of two, was duped by Calgary used-car dealership Gallery of Fine Cars to purchase a vehicle with several overseen mechanical issues.  After expressing her concerns to them,  she'd been given a number of excuses and was told the vehicle was, in fact, safe for the road.  Once we read the CBC News article online, we reached out to Jessica to see if there was anything we could do to help her out.

We had Jessica bring in her vehicle that very week, offering her a complete 85-point mechanical fitness assessment and covered all costs of repairs free of charge while providing her with another vehicle to get around in while her car was being serviced.  Our findings were shocking, to say the least...

Some of the issues we came across included (though, not limited to):

  • Leaking radiator
  • Cracked (left) rear brake shoe, corrosion in brake drum
  • Front brakes required resurfacing and pads de-glazed
  • Rear shoes and rotors needed replacement
  • Cracked engine mount, causing leakage
  • Front tire leak
  • Steering wheel alignment issues
  • Safety recall on sun visors

Automaxx Calgary covered $2,914.90 in pro-bono repairs, along with a $500 insurance deductible for previous hail damage on the unit.  We're happy knowing that she can now travel with her children safely in her vehicle that is now safe for the road!  Merry Christmas to Jessica and her family from all of us here at Automaxx.
